  • A well-designed hard-disk-based camcorder, the JVC Everio GZ-MG505 produces video and stills that look great on TV. But its price might make you hit Pause. ...

  • Slow to focus on zooming. No headphone socket. Drop-off in available pixels in 16:9.On-the-camera battery charging. Lack of optical image stabilisation.
  • I didn?t think it would happen (myself not being a great fan of MPEG video cameras), but if someone was entering video ? especially if they were intending to travel and wanted a convenient, simple camera with a lot of storage for under $2000 ? then I w...

  • Built-in 30GB hard drive, easy file manipulation and transfer, compact if a little weighty, good control layout, acceptable picture quality, quick startup
  • No built-in lens cover, no electronic viewfinder for eye-level shooting, relatively short battery life, no manual focus ring

  • Colours are sometimes too vivid. Hardly pocketable. Optical viewfinder can be grainy and washed out. No HD.
  • 3CCD has yet to prove it’s worth the premium. If you want a hard-disker, go for one of the cheaper Everio models ...

  • Compact design; easy operation
  • Proprietary video codec makes using third-party editing tools problematic
  • Although the hard-disk format has yet to come of age, theres plenty to recommend here. The MG505 is a solid and impressively specced camcorder that pushes the format that little bit closer to superseding tape ...
