The editors liked

  • Quickly switch between photos and video recording. Small iFrame video files. Great stills for a dual-purpose device.
  • Small and light
  • Easy to operate
  • Shoots on cheap memory cards
  • Good microphone
  • Small (ish) form factor (fits into jacket pocket)

The editors didn't like

  • Zoom speed is too fast
  • And can’t be adjusted. Manual focus adjustment disables once you start shooting video.
  • Non-HD quality not great
  • Vocal prompts from the camera itself begin to grate after a while

  • Easy and fun to use, reassuringly weighty (311g) despite mainly plastic build, HD video and photos in one device, SD storage helps maintain small-ish size, Face Chaser function detects up to 12 faces in a frame
  • Expensive, struggles to focus in low light, photos not as sharp as from dedicated stills camera

  • We’re not sure whether we’d pay £500 for a combined camera and video camera given the low cost of flash-based camcorders, but if you’ve the budget for an HD model, the Sanyo Xacti HD2000 won’t disappoint. If the high megapixel...
