The editors didn't like

  • (Minor Nitpicks)
  • No focus peaking in 4K
  • Ineffective video autofocus
  • Big size
  • I'm over DSLRs at this point despite the fact that I acknowledge them as fantastic image making devices
  • The Nikon D850 is an absolutely fantastic camera in so many ways. Need great image quality? The Nikon D850 arguably has some of the best on
  • Live View focus uses contrast detection only
  • Omits built-in flash
  • Live view/video mode still uses sluggish contrast-detect AF
  • Viewfinder only tests at ~98% coverage
  • No 4K at 60p
  • 30-minute video clip limit
  • Focus peaking not supported with 4K
  • Lower buffer capacity at 9fps
  • Needs fast memory cards
  • Pedestrian live view AF
  • Quite expensive
  • 45.7MP BSI-CMOS sensor with great low-and-high ISO performance
  • Native low ISO value of 64 offers class-leading dynamic range and rivals medium format options
  • Impressive 153-pt autofocus system derived from flagship D5
  • New mirror and shutter mechanisms
  • High price
  • AF points clustered around the centre of the frame
  • Live View and Video focusing system lags behind the competition

  • Incredibly high resolution, Upgraded continuous capture with bigger buffer allows for more kinds of photography, Focus lever and touch control makes the camera easier to use than ever
  • High ISO images have quite a bit of noise reduction, No popup flash, Price is higher than before
  • The D850 is certainly a big upgrade over the D810, and we're not just talking about megapixel numbers. The autofocus is much improved, with almost triple the number of focus points and a more usable spread across the frame. The addition of the focus lever...

  • With its swift operation, deadeye-accurate autofocusing and excellent image quality, the Nikon D850 is probably the most all-rounded full-frame DSLR camera I have tested - finally, something worthy of Nikon's centennial year...
