Perhaps saying that a camera straddles the Mendoza line isn't the most rousing endorsement, but the Nikon AW1 offers a very average performance—with a twist. A ruggedized interchangeable lens camera is certainly a novel take on the mirrorless compact, and...
The Nikon 1 AW1 is the first interchangeable lens camera that you can take deep underwater, but it's best left in automatic mode....

Waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof, Produces better images than rugged compacts, Solid construction
Average lens, Lower quality images at higher ISO settings, Only two rugged 1 Nikkor lenses available right now
The Nikon 1 J3 is a solid ILC, but it didn't overwhelm us. However, take that same camera and make it waterproof and shockproof, name it the AW1, and it's hard to not make an overwhelming recommendation. Also, there's nothing else in the world like it. ...
In the AW1, Nikon has delivered the most rugged system camera on the market. Despite being built like a tank and able to survive demanding drops and harsh environments, it is not entirely faultless. The lack of manual controls makes it incredibly slow to...
Sharply focused results, rugged qualities have ensured a built-to-last construction
Occasional problems with inner glass of lens misting up, lacks hotshoe, no tilting screen and no eye level viewfinder
Despite minor misgivings as above, we reckon this is Nikon's most fully realised compact system camera of the past three years. It's a rugged model that, unusually, takes really good photographs, and with consistency. Perhaps that's something worth paying...
Waterproof to 15 metres, shockproof to 2 metres and freezeproof to 10°C, Fast, precise autofocus, Impeccable build quality, Good auto modes, Builtin GPS, Interchangeable lenses
No WiFi, Stainless steel casing can get quite cold—you may need to use gloves!, Most settings only accessible via main menu (ISO, white balance), Altimeter doesn't seem reliable, Picture quality could still be better
Nikon has taken a bit of a risk in making the AW1 a waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof DSLM that's also mainly geared up for use in Auto mode. But as if being the first underwater mirrorless lens-switcher wasn't innovative enough, the AW1 also happens...
