The editors didn't like

  • No optical viewfinder
  • No support for RAW file format
  • Mediocre picture quality in low light
  • Flash may be too close to grip for some hands
  • Motion JPEG movies only (no AVCHD Lite option)
  • No dedicated movie button
  • Sprawling Menu system
  • Tends to clip highlights
  • But that's not unusual for digicams

  • Sometimes has trouble with extreme macro shots
  • Images often look underexposed
  • Maximum aperture is f3.3
  • Bottom Line
  • The Lumix DMC-ZS5 brushes aside most fancy extras and gets down to brass tacks. Its manual controls and fast-focusing 12X-optical-zoom lens make it a big step up from 2009's Lumix DMC-ZS3.
  • No dedicated video record button
  • Playback needs a separate button
  • Disappointing low-light photos
  • 'Fixed' playback mode
  • No direct movie button
  • Limited continuous shooting
  • Mono mic susceptible to wind noise.
  • Slightly chunky
  • Limited upgrade over the TZ7

  • Lens, Intelligent Exposure and AF functions, Metering system, Noise o.k. until ISO 800, 720p movie recording
  • Not as good as D-SLR although price quite similar, Fiddly controls for aperture etc, Some Intelligent functions have little effect
  • Although this camera is great for a compact, we can't help feeling that for an extra bit more cash, you could get a fully fledged D-SLR...

  • Little distortion off the 12x lens, manual controls, focus lock works well
  • No HDMI, menus not the most user friendly, mono mic, HD video format not the best
  • Panasonic pitches the Lumix DMC-TZ8 as an ideal travel companion and for many it will be. The combination of creative control through the manual settings, the wide zoom range and HD video capture make it a good all-rounder. The performance and image qu...
