The editors liked

  • The HD 7870 has low power consumption and high graphical output. It supports up to six displays
  • And the GPU is overclockable to above 1GHz
  • Outruns similarly priced GTX 500-series Nvidia cards
  • Lots of overclocking headroom
  • Support for 4K video and other forward-looking features
  • Good performance. Impressively low power draw. Offers full range of current display technologies.
  • Excellent price/performance versus single cards at the same price
  • Very modest power consumption at load
  • Incredibly low power consumption at idle in most situations
  • HD 7870
  • 28% performance increase over last generation
  • Excellent energy efficiency
  • Good overclocking potential
  • Support for software voltage control
  • Native fullsize HDMI & DisplayPort output
  • Adds support for PCIExpress 3.0 and DirectX 11.1
  • Support for multiple independent audio streams

The editors didn't like

  • This video card is somewhat dated and doesn't perform as well as newer cards
  • Pricey
  • 4K video content and screens likely won't be common for a year or more
  • Competing GPUs offer similar performance for less. Requires two PCIe power connections. Blocks an expansion slot when installed
  • Crossfire scaling may be poor in some current or future games
  • If playing games without vsync
  • Stuttering will likely be noticeable
  • Mounting two cards together on a motherboard without an empty slot in between will lead to overheating and potential crash
  • Price a bit too high
  • Noise levels a tad bit high
  • CCC Overdrive limits too low

  • The HD 7850 doesn’t quite live up to the performance levels of its sibling but most of our praise for the HD 7870 applies here as well. While it may not be able to achieve the framerates necessary to be considered a high end solution, the Pitcairn Pro’...

  • Southern Island/GCN goodies, Serious overclocking potential
  • Fairly uninspiring stock performance, Needs overclocking to be relevant
  • At stock speeds it's fairly dull, with a little light tweaking however you can turn it into a serious hot hatchback with the horsepower to match....
