The editors liked

  • The HD 7870 has low power consumption and high graphical output. It supports up to six displays
  • And the GPU is overclockable to above 1GHz
  • Outruns similarly priced GTX 500-series Nvidia cards
  • Lots of overclocking headroom
  • Support for 4K video and other forward-looking features
  • Good performance. Impressively low power draw. Offers full range of current display technologies.
  • Excellent price/performance versus single cards at the same price
  • Very modest power consumption at load
  • Incredibly low power consumption at idle in most situations
  • HD 7870
  • 28% performance increase over last generation
  • Excellent energy efficiency
  • Good overclocking potential
  • Support for software voltage control
  • Native fullsize HDMI & DisplayPort output
  • Adds support for PCIExpress 3.0 and DirectX 11.1
  • Support for multiple independent audio streams

The editors didn't like

  • This video card is somewhat dated and doesn't perform as well as newer cards
  • Pricey
  • 4K video content and screens likely won't be common for a year or more
  • Competing GPUs offer similar performance for less. Requires two PCIe power connections. Blocks an expansion slot when installed
  • Crossfire scaling may be poor in some current or future games
  • If playing games without vsync
  • Stuttering will likely be noticeable
  • Mounting two cards together on a motherboard without an empty slot in between will lead to overheating and potential crash
  • Price a bit too high
  • Noise levels a tad bit high
  • CCC Overdrive limits too low

  • Good Overclocking, Feature Packed, Very cool running, Low Power consumption,
  • Could be cheaper in comparison to performance
  • The AMD HD7870 is an interesting proposition for AMD to make in an already bulging graphics card market. Throughout the majority of the benchmarks we have run today, it soundly beat the reference NVIDIA GTX570 which translates to HD6970 performance, A...

  • We've seen a lot from AMD just recently and the 7800 series cards for now will finalise the integration of the 7000 series GPUs into the market. As we know the 7800 series cards are the mid-point between the 7700 & 7900 series cards are and there to offer...

  • 37% faster than the previous generation, ZeroCore Power, Low power consumption
  • Reference model fan is audible at idle
  • A card that manages to give high performance at the same time as limiting energy consumption, showing that it's possible to increase performance from one generation to the next without upping the energy cost too much. ...

  • Southern Island/GCN goodies, Serious overclocking potential
  • Fairly uninspiring stock performance, Needs overclocking to be relevant
  • At stock speeds it's fairly dull, with a little light tweaking however you can turn it into a serious hot hatchback with the horsepower to match...

  • As these are reference design cards the build quality of the are the standard level we would expect for a modern GPU and in the coming weeks we expect to see the likes of ASUS, Sapphire and XFX exceed this with their custom cards and coolers. On a desig...

  • Abstract:  There's a big hole in between AMD's £350 Radeon HD 7950 and its £120 Radeon HD 7700. Today, the company introduces Radeon HD 7850 and 7870 to fill that gap, and they push a lot more performance than we expected. But are they really ready for prime time...
