Transfer speeds exceeds Synology's performance figures
Attractively minimal design
Runs fairly quiet
Easy-to-understand UI
Very good transfer-rate performance
Packed with features
The Synology Disk Station DS214se has a robust operating system and a vast amount of applications to offer anything you'd need. The server is also fast
And it's very affordable
Ethernet cable included
Low price
DSM 5.0
Lots of packages to install
The editors didn't like
No USB 3.0 ports

Drives not hot swappable
Entry CPU and RAM limits DS214se to light usage profiles
UI can feel sluggish at times
Drive-swapping requires tools
Only USB 2.0 ports
No hardware video transcoding
The server doesn't have enough power to handle multiple heavy tasks at the same time

No 2.5″ drive holder included
Opening/loading files/programs a bit slow (Slow CPU)
I do not recommend to use the NAS simultaneously with multiple users. (You will lose a lot of performance because of the slow CPU)
Apart from writing large files, the DS214SE is a speedy NAS box indeed, no doubt helped by a tweaked operating system, which also adds to the appeal. It's one of the easiest we've come across to use and apart from a little knowledge of port forwarding ...

Home / Tech News / Featured Announcement / Synology DS214SE Review
Synology clearly thinks very carefully about the processing power it specifies for each NAS. If money is no object there is no question you want a fast dual core processor and no doubt a quad core would be even better. It's just like your mobile phone exc...

The most affordable Synology NAS device until now was the DS213j, available for around £170. The DS214se costs £40 less which makes it an interesting way to get a taste of the world of Synology. The Synology DS214se has a very basic enclosure, but it's...

Abstract: NAS devices are the all-in-one kitchen appliance, the jack of all trades of the home network. They can do one thing, they can do many things, and often you don't even need all of the features. While it's great to own a £350 top-of-the-line model, it doe...
Well known manufacturer, Intuitive GUI, Good level of performance for the price, Simple, no thrills specification
RAID arrays will take slightly longer to build,
PricingAs mentioned at the start of the review, the fundamental area of interest for this system is its price point. Synology have targeted this unit as a rock bottom entry-level 2-bay system for users who are on a strict budget. Priced at a shade over £1...

Abstract: I'm a big fan of Synology, and I use its network attached storage equipment every day. What makes its hardware better than most is the amazing flexibility of its DSM system, where you can add the service functionality you need easily with installable soft...
