  • Dual-band radios (2.4GHz and 5GHz)
  • FasTrack technology prioritizes streaming media and game content
  • Easy to configure

  • Mobile apps worked smoothly
  • Combo router and storage
  • The Western Digital My Net N900 Central dual-band router offers a great combination of fast Wi-Fi speed
  • A nice networking feature set
  • And useful network storage
  • 2 TB internal hard drive
  • Compact design
  • Simple setup
  • Low profile makes it great for cramped space. Tons of connectivity options. Prioritizes content to make what ever you’re doing online feel speedy. Insanely simple to set up and use.

The editors didn't like

  • No watchdog / automated reboot (i.e. must be manually reset if it ever freezes)
  • Lack of USB 3.0
  • Single drive design has limitations
  • Very slow USB write performance
  • Limited feature set
  • Poorly designed utilities
  • Slow USB performance
  • Slow 5GHz throughput at close range
  • Sloppy fit with the optional stand
  • Middling wireless performance
  • Only one USB port
  • Weak smallbusiness feature se
  • Not as fast as competing routers
  • Connecting took a bit longer than usual
  • Signal strength is average
  • Can't mount the router vertically
  • USB ports sit too close to power on/off button. Throughput not as robust at 5 GHz as in other competing high-end routers on the market
  • Large design
  • Can't expand storage
  • The My Net N900 Central's internal hard drive can't be replaced
  • And the router doesn't support the new 802.11ac standard
  • Performance could be better
  • Control panel is easy to use
  • But a little clunky and its color scheme hurts eyes in some lighting conditions
  • Expensive for what it is
  • Other than having a 2 TB hard drive inside
  • Stability issues when transferring files
  • Pricey
  • Same as Apple's AirPort Extreme Base Station. Poor build quality -- its housing is made of some pretty cheap plastic. This might help to keep the router’s guts cool
  • But we bet it won’t stand up to any abuse.

  • Some thought has gone into making a good, responsive web interface. Prettier than your standard router box
  • 2.4GHz performance isn't great, especially at range. Storage isn't worth the extra cost due to low warranty. Cisco, Billion and Netgear all offer twice the warranty of Western Digital
  • Western Digital is off to a good start with its routers; it has a well-designed, usable interface, attractive aesthetics and a decent feature set. The 2.4GHz performance needs improvement, though, and the one-year warranty and non-user-serviceable hard...

  • Browser shootout Best browser 2012: which should you be using? Without doubt, Western Digital has done an excellent job with the WD My Net N900 Central. Anyone adding this to, or building a network around it can be sure of getting an up-to-date chunk of n...

  • Excellent 5GHz 802.11n performance, Integrated storage offers simple NAS functionality, Simple remote access to media content
  • Weak 2.4GHz 802.11n performance, Cheap build materials, Too expensive for a router lacking 802.11ac
  • Western Digital has made a solid entrance into the router market. The My Net N900 Central may not be the most attractive router you'll see and its 2.4GHz performance is nothing special, but its 5GHz speeds are excellent and its integrated storage makes it...

  • Lacklustre 2.4GHz performance, Poor NAS speeds, Expensive outlay, Only one USB port, Poor parental features
  • In a way the full nature of its feature-set is the downfall of the WD My Net N900 Central. Including the 1TB HDD significantly bumps the price of this device, doubling it over that of the hard-drive free WD My Net N900 that, with its expanded Gigabit LAN...

  • Dual-band 802.11n router with built-in hard disk
  • Expensive
  • The N900 Central is a little pricey, but the fact that it includes both a hard disk and a dual-band router makes it a good option for any home or small office that needs an all-in-one networking and storage system in a single box
