The editors liked

  • Cute. Leather casing protects device. Stutter-free streaming via Wi-Fi.
  • Wide range of Internet-enabled widgets. Surprisingly versatile. Cuddliest technology device ever
  • Not your average sleek black box
  • Innovative way to deliver Web content
  • Quick access to Web content and radio without a computer
  • Many alarm combinations can trigger different music and widgets on each day. Presents data from many internet sources. Streams online music stations.
  • The Chumby is an adaptable
  • Fun
  • Wireless multimedia device made to bring bite-size Web widgets and streaming Internet radio into your home.
  • Streams internet radio
  • Or music from your iPod or USB drive. Interspersed ads are unobtrusive. Soft and pretty. Highconcept idea executed extremely well
  • Cool design
  • Tons of fun

The editors didn't like

  • Expensive. Poor sound quality. Setting the alarm is difficult. Touch screen is quirky and buttons are too small.
  • PSAs and sponsored widgets appear without your permission. Touchscreen responds to fingernails better than fingertips. Requires power cord at all times.
  • Pricey
  • Inputting info can be difficult
  • No Web browsing or two-way e-mail
  • No battery
  • Finicky touchscreen
  • No web browser means you can’t access some of your favorite content. Mediocre device interface. Widget quality varies greatly. Can’t stream music from local network. Ad widgets might pop into your rotation.
  • The Chumbys versatile features paradoxically make it hard to figure just what to do with it. The required power adapter limits its portability. If your home lacks Wi-Fi
  • Then the Chumby is just a cuddly brick.
  • Touchscreen is finicky. Limited widget scheduling
  • So daily content gets repetitive. Power adapter connection makes Chumby cuddletime awkward
  • Power is supplied by an AC adapter that must be plugged in

  • It would be quite reasonable to dismiss the Chumby as a toy or as the answer to a question nobody asked, but that would be to wilfully overlook its good points and misconstrue its purpose. Think of it as a network connected radio alarm clock with some...

  • Abstract:  When I first heard of the Chumby, I wasn’t quite sure exactly what to think of it. Was it just a silly toy? An adult version of Furby with a screen? Well, now that I’ve been living with one for a couple of weeks, I think that comparison is pretty accu...

  • Though the Chumby is primarily a novelty - and at $179, not a cheap one - its goofy exterior hides a powerful idea. Devices driven directly by internet content are likely to become commonplace. If youre willing to pay the price, the Chumby isnt a ba...
