The editors liked

  • Beautiful new UI
  • Speed improvements throughout
  • New Windows Media Center
  • Strong design and Microsoft dont always go together
  • But they do in Windows 7. Users might take a while to get used to the new taskbar and Aero Peek
  • But theyre a pleasure to use.
  • Smaller disk and memory footprint. Faster installation
  • Startup
  • Shutdown. Stable. Less intrusive. Taskbar icons more flexible. New home networking capabilities
  • Including media streaming. Working with external hardware is easier. Multitouch support. Nice...

The editors didn't like

  • Few major changes over Vista
  • Internet Explorer
  • Somewhat expensive
  • Performance is still hit-or-miss in Windows 7. At the ripe age of seven
  • Windows XP still performs better in some categories.
  • Keeps the Registry and some other Windows baggage. Performance not a huge gain over Vista. A bit pricey for upgraders.

  • Improved performance, Pinned icons, Live thumbnails, Jump lists and window snaps make Aero useful as well as attractive, New ways of organising files with libraries, Improved backup, Less annoying notifications
  • XP Mode isn't an integrated option yet, Microsoft backed down on libraries and Ctrl, E brings up My Computer instead, You can't add NAS drives to libraries, Ultimate edition is almost unnecessary except for adding BitLocker – which should be in the Profes
  • Windows 7 combines the security and architectural improvements of Windows Vista with better performance than XP can deliver on today's hardware. No version of Windows is ever perfect, but Windows 7 really is the best release of Windows yet....

  • Microsoft’s proven history of original innovation in the design of operating systems has been surpassed in this interesting new take on the Windows 7 OS. Despite the limited availability of familiar applications, we expect this variant to prove itself...

  • Simple, clean interface, far fewer popups, new features largely beneficial
  • No real performance boost, still not enough Mobile features
  • Very much a re-boot and re-launch for Microsoft, Windows 7 is the natural successor to Windows XP...

  • Abstract:  While most Tom’s Hardware readers initially resisted the switch from Windows XP, responses to our own articles since last year suggested that many have given up the fight and moved to Vista. Perhaps Microsoft’s end-of-life announcement for that venerab...

  • The most disappointing of the new versions, Windows 7 Professional omits what we consider to be key encryption features - most businesses should choose Windows 7 Ultimate or Enterprise if they can. Extra features such as Windows XP Mode do lift it abo...
