But trickles down much of the design and materials of its more expensive sibling. This budget model finally runs the full version of Windows. The keyboard cover remains the best way to transform a slate i

Inking Experience
Excellent metal design includes a kickstand and fullsized USB port. Generally good performance from Atom SoC. Type Cover and Surface Pen are great accessories that make the Surface 3 a versatile device. Windows 10 should make this an even better product.

The editors didn't like
I'm not a fan of tablet cameras (seriously
Shoot your vacation photos with something better) and the Surface 3's shooter is mediocre at best. Medium-brightness scenes photograph okay
But the sensor just falls flat on bright colors and surfaces. Meh
The
Intel Atom x7 not up for all tasks
Kickstand only has two positions
Updating experience was horrific
A bit heavy and thick for a tablet
Complete package with Type Cover comparatively expensive
Use on the lap not really convenient
No maintainability/upgradeability
Bottleneck eMMC storage solution
Very long charging times
Atom is fast enough
But still not really fast
Subpar Storage performance
Pricey with extras
Type Cover's cramped trackpad
Charging takes really long
WiFi speeds were slower than expected

Trading down to a low-power processor means this isn't a full-time PC. The clever keyboard case is still sold separately
And costs a lot compared to the base hardware. The kickstand has only three preset angles
$499 advertised price is currently just for the tablet
Battery life is actually less than the Surface Pro 3
Limited to Microsoft Office
Web browsing
Some basic games and apps
It's Intel Atom
So it's not nearly as fast as an Intel Core i machine like Surface Pro 3. Kickstand loses the Pro model's infinite positions
Pricey
Plastic construction
No angle adjustment
Limited options for monitor and audio connections
Lock slot only secures the dock itself
Not the tablet
Speakers or headphones required for audio
Still heavy as a tablet
$499 base model has only 2GB of RAM
64GB storage
Total with 4GB RAM
Keyboard
And stylus is $779
Awkward lap experience
Slow storage
Keyboard not included
Type Cover is an essential accessory
Heavy for handheld use
Weak on-screen keyboard
Type Cover and Surface Pen sold separately
Atom processor can't compete with Intel Core CPUs
Power connector is loose and bulky
Built-in kickstand offers limited adjustability
Still out of many people's price range. Slightly underpowered for real laptop work. Windows still isn't a touchfriendly operating system. Tweener size is too big for tablets and too small for laptops
Awkward hardware for laptop use with small trackpad
Performance isn't as good as similarly priced laptops
Weak touch apps for tablet use
Some comfort issues
Uncompetitive battery life
Lacking support for AptX
AAC
Or LDAC for higher-quality sound
Sound lacks refinement and treble energy
Worldclass build and design
Fullsized USB and kickstand prove invaluable for productivity
Decent performance
All things considered
Excellent display
Base unit's 2GB of RAM low for a device in this class
Win 8.1 and core apps take up too much space
Can be sluggish with heavier operations
64GB variant offers very little free space
Speakers sound flat
Camera performs poorly under low light
Exceptionally long charging time
Typing on your lap
Type cover is pricey
Pen not included
Type Cover is not included and is sold as an expensive (yet musthave) $130 accessory. Not great as a laptop. Battery life is somewhat disappointing.
Keyboard is another $130
Entry model has only 2GB RAM
Not powerful enough for anything beyond basic computing
Relatively loud coil whine
Difficult-to-open case gets in the way of repairs and upgrades
