The editors liked

  • Seamless region switching is an impressive technical feat
  • Satisfying resource management loop and city construction
  • As exhaustive an Industrial Age city-builder as anyone could hope for
  • The "move" tool truly is a blessing
  • Watching your settlement become a huge city is very satisfying
  • It looks gorgeous. Especially that church
  • Visually stunning for a topdown managementstrategy game
  • Looking fantastic throughout
  • Extremely satisfying gameloop as settlements grow to then offer more ways to expand and grow them
  • Wide variety of building and resource types to help with expanding yo

The editors didn't like

  • Bad at surfacing critical information
  • Lackluster tutorial and so-so campaign
  • Despite the visual detail and beauty
  • It can feel quite dry and cold
  • There simply isn't enough feedback to let you know what you're doing wrong and how to fix it
  • It can be unintuitive in areas
  • Such as explaining finances or setting up trade routes
  • Questing
  • Beyond the core story
  • Is too random and outoftouch with the rest of the game

  • As always, Anno 1800 is flawed but strangely engrossing. I've spent 15 or 20 hours constructing my little ocean-spanning empire now, and may well spend 15 or 20 more fleshing it out. Much as I miss the additional challenges posed by the environments in 22...

  • Abstract:  I would describe Anno 1800 as a 'one more go' kind of experience, except it's not a game where 'goes' are really a thing. Sure, you can play individual scenarios in sandbox or multiplayer modes, but constructing a full-fledged city in Anno 1800 takes anyw...

  • Abstract:  Rome was built in a day, complete with variety theatres. And a union office. And lots and lots of snooty artisans.Three months have passed since Ubisoft hailed the comeback of the Anno franchise with a very, very good instalment. The reception to Anno 1...

  • Abstract:  Anno 1800 enjoys a level of grandeur thanks to the associations of its title. The franchise is well established at this point and represents a high-quality sandbox experience. Though there have always been shortcomings levelled against each instalment. An...

  • Anno 1800 is a grind at times, but those moments of “eureka” when I'd figure out production rhythms and layouts that kept me operating in the green were delightful. It toes a difficult line of welcoming strategy gaming novices while also providing gamepla...

  • Abstract:  Elegante y exigente.
