The editors liked

  • A great single-player campaign
  • And a wide variety of multiplayer modes mean you won't run out of things to do
  • Good variety of fun weapons and ways to use them
  • The classic formula still works
  • Beautiful graphics
  • A siege battle with multiple layers? So much fun
  • One of the most important characters in the series goes out with a whimper
  • Not a bang. It's entirely appropriate
  • Multiplayer is ful
  • Exhilarating new multiplayer modes like Beast and "Horde 2.0
  • " fourplayer coop is a welcome addition
  • Imaginatively grotesque Lambent Locust creature designs
  • Bolder narrative this time around.
  • Exciting
  • Emotional
  • And eminently satisfying campaign
  • Beautiful locations enrich story and gameplay alike
  • Fortifications make Horde mode more strategic
  • Switching sides in Beast mode is brutal fun.

The editors didn't like

  • There are still some questions left unanswered
  • Some of the enemies are more annoying than scary and/or satisfying to fight
  • Sometimes the game's levels get bogged down in fetch quests
  • The dialog is often stupid
  • The underwater scene was so close to Episode One I kept expecting to see a Gungan
  • Campaign feels like Gears 2.5 at times
  • Rarely tossing us something we haven't seen before
  • New characters are somewhat underdeveloped .
  • No tutorial for Beast mode.

  • Abstract:  Gears of War defined a console generation, but in 2011 it has almost become a victim of its own success. The signature third-person cover system has become commonplace, and plenty of its tropes have become weary from third-party overuse, such as the ne...

  • Should I buy the Epic Edition? The game can be purchased in multiple flavors, and the price goes up with each successive edition. We were sent the $150 Epic Edition for review, and this rather large package came with goodies that should appeal to the hardc...

  • Lengthy campaign ties up pretty much every loose end in the trilogy. Fourplayer cooperative mode provides ample reason to play and replay story missions. Deep multiplayer filled with fresh modes and unlockable status rewards will keep fans playing for months.
  • The fourplayer campaign has resulted in a slight but noticeable drop in difficulty. Narrative won’t do much to clam up series detractors who like to lay into the franchise’s penchant for soapy melodrama.
  • Epic Games saved the best for last, delivering a satisfying concluding campaign with mammoth cooperative play as well as the richest, deepest competitive multiplayer experience in the series. There’s no denying it’s fast-food storytelling (our tree-tr...

  • Abstract:  Touted as the final in the trilogy, Gears of War 3 has had the luxury of nearly three years in development. Anyone who’s played the previous two games will find a good deal of familiar ground here, but that is by no means a bad thing. Character dialo...

  • Abstract:  Gears of War 3 If there's one reason to purchase an XBox 360, the reason is Gears of War. Gears of War by Epic Games is easily one of the most entertaining third person shooter games to be available on any platform. Strong words but true... reminiscent...

  • The best shooter you’ll find on any console. Great new weapons and enemies. Easy on the eye. Beast mode and Horde 2.0. Pretty much everything not listed under 'downs'.
  • The cutscenes are appalling. Irritating, one-dimensional characters. Vehicle levels and boss fights still grate. May cost you your job/relationship/tan.

  • Abstract:  Muscle-bound men, smears of blood and guts, and giant, glowing monsters are all stock-standard for the Gears franchise. But this time around, something’s different. Where Gears 2 lacked any real emotional depth, Gears of War 3 not only hits the nail on...
