The editors liked

  • Beautiful picture with excellent colors and the blackest blacks. Plenty of connection options. Simple design exudes grace and poise. Builtin WiFi
  • Watch YouTube
  • Netflix
  • Hulu and Sony's own Hollywood offerings without an external box
  • Attractively designed. Excellent image detail. Wide viewing angles. Accurate colors. Energy efficient.
  • The Sony KDL-HX850 delivers excellent picture quality for an LCD
  • With deep blacks and plenty of detail in shadows. Blooming was minimal
  • And both uniformity and viewing angle were very good. The Gorilla Glass front adds both toughness and good looks

The editors didn't like

  • Menus are a mess
  • Remote is meh
  • And configuration requires Ring TFM. Internet options (Yahoo widgets!) aren't easy to navigate
  • But at least the remote has a dedicated Netflix button. 3D glasses sold separately. It does Skype
  • But the camera is sold sepa
  • Pricey
  • And 3D glasses not included. Low contrast ratio
  • The HX850 is expensive compared with like-performing plasmas
  • And color tended somewhat toward blue

  • The Sony HX850 is a smart-looking Smart TV with sparkling picture quality, making it a front-runner for plasma-phobic videophiles.

  • Sony has created an elegant TV with their Monolithic approach. The TV is minimalistic, clean and without any visible joints. HX850 is the first Google TV ready model but until Sony's Google TV boxes arrive we only Sony's Bravia Internet Video platform is...

  • Picture exhibits very good sharpness and detail; excellent built-in speakers; impressive selection of internet sources; built-in help menus
  • Difficult to access some ports; poorly designed remote control, $2,299.00

  • At $2299 and $3499 (for the 46-inch and 55-inch models, respectively) the HX850 is on par with its LED competition in terms of price — it's certainly more affordable than Panasonic's WT50 — while producing a picture that can compete with plasmas like Pann...

  • Very good 2D picture. Reasonably good 3D. Good network content. Good tablet/phone control feature
  • No PVR function
  • With its one-sheet-of-glass design, the Sony Bravia KDL-55HX850 offers rather good 3D, excellent 2D and a good range of network smarts....

  • Elegant design, Awesome 2D picture quality, Good online content, Excellent value
  • A little crosstalk with 3D, A few operating issues, SEN loads slowly, Very rare backlight 'blocking'
  • There really isn't any overstating the potential importance of the KDL-46HX853 to Sony right now. For in one single leap its stunning picture performance takes the struggling Japanese giant from near-zero to all-conquering hero - an achievement made all ...

  • Excellent HD picture quality, Accurate preset colour modes, Excellent colour and contrast after adjustment
  • Remote feels cheap, Interface looks dated, App support is an afterthought
  • Sony's new HX850 has good picture quality for its price, performing better than similarly-priced LG and Samsung models in its default and calibrated settings. Apart from some minor issues with detail in dark areas, the HX850 handles both standard and HD v...

  • Outstanding image processing, artefactfree framerate frippery, stylish Monolith design, contentpacked entertainment portal
  • Crosstalk still an issue with 3D content, thin, nasal sonics, no support for MKV

  • Decent picture quality, good uniformity of picture from an edge-LED set, decent price at time of writing, attractive "art object" design, full of connectivity including Skype and catch-up services,
  • Slanted design won't suit all and is exaggerated in 55-inch model, corner filtration "vignettes" in bright scenes, dark scenes show some inevitable edge-LED light, default sound needs tweaking, SEN access is too slow, Homeshare needs a rework
  • Even a year on from its unveiling the Sony Bravia KDL-55HX853 still proves its worth. Great picture quality and uniformity from this edge-LED LCD set that's only really let down by slow Sony Entertainment Network access and that slanted design which wo...

  • Abstract:  Like the similar KDL-40HX753, the Sony Bravia KDL-40HX853 comes with a stand that angles the set slightly backwards. In this case, though, it's much broader and chunkier as it not only supports the TV but also contains speakers. Sadly these speakers do...
