The editors liked

  • Plays JPEG and MP3 files on DVDs. Supports 24-Hz output with Blu-ray movies. Provides basic picture control settings and presets.
  • Excellent picture quality
  • Inexpensive for a Blu-ray player
  • Offers HDMI upscaling to 1080p
  • The player can output 1080p/60 or 1080p/24 via HDMI
  • And its image quality with highdef movies is excellent
  • The BDPS300 also does a nice job of upconverting standarddefinition DVDs
  • Offering good detail and minimal digital artifacts
  • Excellent picture quality on Blu-ray and DVD
  • DVD upconversion up to 1080p
  • HDMI output.

The editors didn't like

  • Slow disc load times with some Blu-ray movies. No 24-Hz output with DVD video. No bitstream audio output (HDMI).
  • Slow load times
  • Lacks onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD
  • It does not support BonusView (pictureinpicture functionality) or BDLive (the ability to access interactive Web content)
  • This player does not decode Dolby TrueHD and DTSHD or pass it in bitstream form over HDMI
  • Startup and disc navigation are slower than you'll find on newer Bluray players
  • Especially with Bluray discs that use a lot of BDJava in their menus.
  • No onboard Dolby TrueHD decoding
  • Particularly unbearable on newer BD Java discs like Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Some minor video performance issues
  • No Ethernet port for firmware upgrades.
