The editors liked

  • Class-leading hardware features
  • Very easy setup
  • Reasonable price
  • Huge range of compatible devices
  • Amazing support
  • Easy setup
  • Works with many devices
  • Intuitive app
  • Free to use
  • WiFi or Ethernet Connect the Hub 2 to your router directly via Ethernet or place it anywhere else in the house thanks to WiFi connectivity
  • Simple setup It took about 2 minutes to get the Hub 2 up and running
  • Guided product integrations The Wink app has
  • 5GHz Wi-Fi and Ethernet support
  • Faster processor and more memory than the original
  • Enhanced security features
  • Can easily transfer settings from original hub
  • The companion app is the $99/£80/AU$130 Wink Hub 2's strongest asset -- the layout is logical and step-by-step tutorials make it relatively easy to pair (most) devices
  • Can be fully wireless
  • No ethernet cable required
  • Setup is streamlined and simple
  • As is adding new devices
  • Supports all the most popular smart home protocols

The editors didn't like

  • Smartphone app could be more responsive and better organized
  • Some "Works with Wink" products are better than others
  • Somewhat simplistic logic
  • Wink app doesn't always let you access other devices' full features
  • No easy multiuser setup You have to grant access to other users for each device you add
  • Individually
  • Wink's app doesn't always offer as many options for third-party devices as their dedicated apps do
  • I received a steady stream of error messages when trying to create automation rules and never managed to run one successfully. Occasionally latency issues slowed things down and Lutron devices are still laughably difficult to connect to Wink
  • No built-in battery backup
  • Coordinating with Alexa isn't completely seamless
  • Miffed to get pop-up ads in the app for a product I'm already using

  • The Wink Hub 2 is fine, but it's hard to recommend over platforms like Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit that reduce challenging behind-the-scenes integrations to simple voice commands...
