The editors liked

  • Though it didn't beat them outright
  • The PowerBot VR9000 kept up with Neato and Roomba in our tests
  • And it bests them both with its slate of unique features
  • Including a killer point-cleaning feature
  • Excellent pickup on bare floors
  • Picked up debris very well along walls
  • Very good pickup of surface debris on carpet
  • Very efficient cleaning time
  • Initial setup was very easy
  • And controls are intuitive for everyday use
  • The dustbin was well enclosed to

The editors didn't like

  • The PowerBot lacks a side-sweeping brush to help it clean along walls
  • And it wasn't quite as sharp a navigator as Neato
  • The largest model in our test
  • It was not able to fit under our sofa

  • Abstract:  While it's out there picking up dirt, you can also use the Point Cleaning tool, a little laser pointer that directs the VR9000 wherever you command it. As long as you keep the beam in front of the vacuum, it will follow. Finally, there's the dirt bin. It'...

  • Do you already own a vacuum? If the answer is no, then you're probably better off spending half the POWERbot VR9000's price tag on a nice Dyson or something because you'll still need to have an old-school vacuum on hand. But if the answer is yes, and you...

  • Top-of-the-line models from Roomba and Neato each clean better than the PowerBot while costing hundreds less. We're sticking with those....

  • Decent navigation, Good on hard floors, Gentle on furniture, Remote control gives manual control
  • Struggled with small steps, Poor carpet cleaning, Doesn't get close to edges, Tangles with cables, Expensive
  • A decent robot vacuum cleaner, but not good enough that we'd recommend you buy one....

  • There were a number of enjoyable things about the Powerbot, chiefly not having to lug it about the place. At first I was grateful for the free labour, despite a niggling doubt in the back of my mind about allowing something else to do the work I should ha...
