The editors liked

  • Able to program an appliance to turn on/off automatically
  • Can override the rules programmed for a Switch anytime
  • Can access the Switch from anywhere so long as I have WiFi or cellular access
  • Can easily automate appliances in your home to increase your comfort and convenience and increase security
  • Plugs into an AC outlet
  • So there is no expensive installation required
  • Works with a wide variet
  • Easy setup. Can remotely switch appliances on or off based on time or motion. Modular system can accommodate multiple switches and motion detectors.
  • The Belkin WeMo Switch + Motion's relatively low price
  • Lack of a subscription fee
  • And plug-and-play simplicity will appeal to many budding home automators

The editors didn't like

  • Enable/disable remote access dance I had to do when adding a new Switch
  • Must have a mobile device
  • As there are no PC or Mac apps for the WeMo devices at this time
  • Expensive. App frequently crashes. iOS device support only
  • IFTTT automations weren't quite as reliable as we'd like
  • And it was a challenge to find ones that we'd actually use regularly
  • App navigation can be confusing
  • Particularly when setting up rules. Currently no way to view a timeline of past events

  • Allows you to switch appliances and lamps on and off using your smartphone, Works with motion and time-based rules, Supports ifTTT
  • Motion detection was a little sluggish, App wasn't always responsive when creating rules, Physical size can impede adjoining outlets
  • The Belkin WeMo Switch+Motion is a basic home automation kit comprised of a switch and a motion detector. It allows you to control the on and off state of anything you plug into it directly from your phone, via motion, and even remotely over the Internet...

  • Brings home automation a step closer; simple and intuitive iOS app; ability to create rules and schedule events; modular system offers room to add more rooms and appliances
  • Mixed results based on customer reviews and home set-ups; support could be better, particularly information on IFTTT; additional Motion senses are available without paying for the WeMo Switch; cheaper alternatives, WeMo Switch $59.95, WeMo Switch + Motion

  • The WeMo Switch+Motion is one of the simpler home automation kits on the market and we think it would make a great introduction to home automation for those of you who have been longing to control certain appliances and lighting from your smartphone. The...

  • While more costly than some options, programmable timer switches or timer plugs for instance, the WeMo system is a worthy option, thanks to its simplicity and scalability. While it may not keep the bad guys from your doors or windows, it does offer some p...

  • No. Unless Belkin releases updates that make it work, these things are just taking up outlets in your home, preventing you from using them as you normally would. This is like adding an extra doorknob to a door. Except it usually wont turn. Stick with the...
