TestSeek's Expert Reviews Summary

On a first glance, the Can9on Powershot SX10 IS appears as a complex or sophisticated piece of equipment. With a 20x optical zoom, a 10 megapixel sensor, and a 2.5 inch flipout LCD twirl screen, it is a perfect choice for most photographers. It has an AA battery system, stereo quality sound for movies and an expressive screen. The SX10 IS gives a much wider and lengthier shot with a 28-560mm range installed. It also has a DIGIC 4 processor with a H.246 codec for video storage.

The camera also consists of a face-recognition software with an extra self-timer option which makes use of the face-detection while focusing is done. Shadowy images can be recreated using an enhanced i-Contrast feature which is enabled in the SX10 IS. The shutter-lag is very slight, with a receptive zoom system; and saving high resolution images takes below one second.

The editors liked

  • DSLR style handling and structure
  • User friendly interface
  • Easy to use manual controlling system
  • 20x optical zoom capability
  • Fast and silent USM motors.

The editors didn't like

  • Poor battery life
  • Bulkier than others in its range
  • Not very compact
  • Lack of HD movies.

TestSeek's Conclusion

The Canon Powershot SX10 IS is not equipped to handle a through professional shooting set. It does not have an imager capable of high contrast issues, which leads to blowouts very often. It can be concluded that this is a camera purely for amateurs, and for those who do not feel that image resolution is the only thing that matters.

  • The Canon PowerShot SX10 is Canon’s ‘other’ ultra-zoom camera with a more traditional 10 megapixel CCD sensor (versus CMOS). In many other aspects, the PowerShot SX1 and SX10 have a lot in common: a huge 20X zoom lens with optical image...

  • Speedy performance with solid battery life; articulating LCD; comfortable shooting design; can zoom during movie capture.
  • No HD movie capture or raw support; a few annoying design quirks; frustratingly narrow lens aperture at maximum zoom.
  • A nice evolution of the megazoom, the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS delivers some improvements over its predecessor and provides an attractive option for megazoom shooters.
