  • Attractively priced

  • No need of CD/DVD to install it
  • Compact housing packs in 1.5TB of storage space

The editors didn't like

  • No active cooling
  • Still only a 2 year warranty on a hard drive that usually has three
  • Sealed unit so hard drive replacement will be difficult
  • No power On/Off switch for drive...
  • User Interface for the GoFlex TV HD Media Player needs work
  • Taking advantage of all the accessories the product has to offer can get expensive.
  • Could not get the eSATA to work
  • Encryption key is stored in an unencrypted XML file
  • Firewire and USB 3.0 kit are quite expensive.
  • Short USB cables (only 18 - 20 inches)
  • Proprietary cable means expensive cable replacement
  • 2 year warranty is extremely short compared to older model's 5 year warranty
  • Transfer rates don't show what USB 3.0 can really do
  • $200-$230 price tag
  • This is not a con for me
  • But some people may prefer disks with external power supplies
  • You have to buy separate adapters in order to use the drive with bus interfaces other than USB 2.0.
  • Connector modules can be unwieldy
  • Must remove module to insert into a dock
  • Adapters come in only one color. Adapters are extra. Memeo Premium backup is trialware.
  • Only moderate USB 2.0 speeds
  • Additional interface cables are costly
  • The GoFlex Ultra's USB 3.0 performance could be better and the drive doesn't include a USB 3.0 add-in card for computers that don't yet have this connection
  • Must have powered eSATA port to use the eSATA cable
  • Could get expensive with the addition of several connection types
  • Only three year warranty

  • If your portable storage needs insist that you have plenty of disk space, without taking up too much physical space, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1.5TB external hard drive is worth considering. 1.5TB is definitely an ample amount of storage, and havin...

  • The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra-portable offers great flexibility, USB 3.0, and a large amount of storage. It also works with both Macs and PCs without having to be reformatted
  • The GoFlex Ultra's USB 3.0 performance could be better and the drive doesn't include a USB 3.0 add-in card for computers that don't yet have this connection
  • Even with the slightly low USB 3.0 performance, the GoFlex Ultra still makes an excellent portable external hard drive for people who need to expand their computer's storage.
