The editors didn't like

  • No active cooling
  • Still only a 2 year warranty on a hard drive that usually has three
  • Sealed unit so hard drive replacement will be difficult
  • No power On/Off switch for drive...
  • User Interface for the GoFlex TV HD Media Player needs work
  • Taking advantage of all the accessories the product has to offer can get expensive.
  • Could not get the eSATA to work
  • Encryption key is stored in an unencrypted XML file
  • Firewire and USB 3.0 kit are quite expensive.
  • Short USB cables (only 18 - 20 inches)
  • Proprietary cable means expensive cable replacement
  • 2 year warranty is extremely short compared to older model's 5 year warranty
  • Transfer rates don't show what USB 3.0 can really do
  • $200-$230 price tag
  • This is not a con for me
  • But some people may prefer disks with external power supplies
  • You have to buy separate adapters in order to use the drive with bus interfaces other than USB 2.0.
  • Connector modules can be unwieldy
  • Must remove module to insert into a dock
  • Adapters come in only one color. Adapters are extra. Memeo Premium backup is trialware.
  • Only moderate USB 2.0 speeds
  • Additional interface cables are costly
  • The GoFlex Ultra's USB 3.0 performance could be better and the drive doesn't include a USB 3.0 add-in card for computers that don't yet have this connection
  • Must have powered eSATA port to use the eSATA cable
  • Could get expensive with the addition of several connection types
  • Only three year warranty

  • Multiple interface options, Threeyear warranty
  • Extra interfaces are pricey
  • The GoFlex Ultra Portable USB 3.0 returns tidy performance for an acceptable price. If you've got the speedy ports to make the most of it, we'd say that this drive will treat you quite well indeed.

  • Flexibility to select your own connection, USB 3.0
  • No uninstaller for some parts of the included software for Macs
  • The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra-portable Drive is a fantastically versatile storage system. It allows an investment in compact and portable hard drives up to huge capacities, that can then be easily connected to any computer with a USB 2.0, USB 3.0, Fi...

  • High capacity; good performance and price
  • Requires unusual and chunky adaptor cables
  • To be honest, we'd have been happy with a more conventional design that simply built the USB and FireWire interfaces straight onto the drive itself. However, the GoFlex Ultra Portable drive for Mac is reasonably priced and performs well, and its 1.5TB cap...

  • We're not a fan of Seagate's GoFlex connector arrangement but we relish the idea of a high-capacity portable drive. We have to give Seagate kudos for being first out of the gate with a portable drive of this size. If you buy the Seagate FreeAgent GoFl...
