  • Great overall performance
  • Minimal effect of encryption on performance
  • Upgraded RAM and CPU
  • Wide range of downloadable apps
  • Quiet
  • Storage performance is the focus of the DS415and it performs well at this task. The setup process is very easy for first time NAS appliance users and there are enough extras for users to be surprised by all of the functions available.
  • Very fast network-transfer speeds in all possible configurations
  • Highly intuitive and easy-to-use operating system (OS) with a lot of features
  • DSM provides some crucial security options (antivirus application
  • AES 256-bit encryption
  • Optional 2-Step log

The editors didn't like

  • Weaker 8k sequential iSCSI performance than QNAP TS-451
  • No HDMI or optical audio ports
  • Memory expansion voids warranty
  • RAID 5 read a bit slow
  • Without the bells and whistles offered by some of the competing products in this price range we think the DS415is a bit overpriced.
  • RAM is not easily upgradeable (however
  • 2 GB will sufficiently cover every possible usage scenario)
  • Not compatible with the ErP Lot 6 2013 directive
  • You cannot format an external disk into NTFS (however
  • External NTFS disks can be read/written properly)

  • The DS415+ gives users solid storage performance but lacks many of the new features found on competitor's products. Synology does offer systems with the bells and whistles, this one just has a tighter focus on its storage...

  • The DS415+ is targeted towards business users, yet has a very competitive price. Currently priced at $600, it's $49 cheaper than the higher ranked QNAP TS-453 Pro, but $70 more expensive than the DS415play. The QNAP sports four Gigabit Ethernet ports and...
