The editors liked

  • Excellent sequential read and write performance*
  • Excellent random read IOPS / NCQ scaling performance*
  • Attractive and light weight brushed aluminum housing
  • 1.8" form factor internals open up some more possibilities for those willing to get their hands
  • Delivers performance comparable to higher-end drives
  • Consistent performance
  • 256MB DRAM cache prevents stutter
  • Top-notch Samsung controller
  • Beautiful enclosure
  • Samsung's 470 solid-state drive (SSD) is light and good-looking
  • And offers great performance. The drive supports the traditional 2.5-inch design and works in any application where other SATA hard drives with the same design are used
  • Competitive performance and price
  • Attractive chassis
  • Strong random writes...

The editors didn't like

  • Very poor performance in mixed read+write scenarios
  • Does not support 6Gbps SATA
  • Expensive
  • Not the fastest rated/performing drive available but not too shabby either
  • The Samsung 470 SSD is significantly more expensive than traditional hard drives
  • And its storage capacity caps at only 256GB. The drive doesn't support the new SATA 6Gbps data transfer rate
  • Except when compared to 'max IOPS' SandForce drives.

  • The Samsung 470 Series SSD shows a clear performance advantage on our Macs, even one that don’t have the latest SATA II bus supported by this SSD. Due to the relatively low power draw when compared to our rotational hard drive, we noted a significant...

  • The 256MB SSD from Samsung’s 470 series is quite a surprise to us. One might think that the market is ruled by Intel’s products or by SSDs based on SandForce controllers but that’s not true. Some manufacturers have got something up their sleeve such a...

  • 3 Months after its initial launch, the Samsung 470 SSD remains a very fast solid state drive, and the numbers show that it can offer great performance for the price, and decent capacity (for the price). At $499, this 256GB model is still expensive in an a...

  • Abstract:  For years Samsung has made hard drives and great hard drives at that, their only problem is most people don’t realize they make hard drives. Well they do and have been for years in fact if you buy an OEM system chances are it has a Samsung HDD in it. ...

  • Samsung really surprised us with their 256GB 470 Series solid state drive. It performed above expectations on nearly every benchmark and kept pace with the SandForce drives that seem to the darling of the industry right now. Barring more data on long...
