The editors liked

  • Some new additions to the core game
  • Excellent 3D renditions of backgrounds
  • Game is still freakin' awesome.
  • Everything good about the original game is still the same in this version
  • The updated graphics look amazing on the 3DS screen
  • The remixed score works extremely well
  • And helps to set the pacing of the action
  • Excellent platforming and shooting
  • Lovely 3D visuals
  • Quirky
  • Mysterious story.
  • New 3D graphics and presentations
  • Can use 2D character and enemy sprites
  • Multiple difficulty levels
  • Multiple endings
  • Great background music
  • Lots of weapons to collect and quite a few choices to make. Bottom screen shows the map (when you unlock it) and inventory. Beating the game unlocks a Time Attack mode.

The editors didn't like

  • Perhaps not enough new stuff to warrant the price
  • Character models don't look nearly as good as the environments
  • Some puzzles and ending requirements are difficult to figure out.
  • No New Gamemode means you start over from scratch every time you finish
  • Like all 3DS titles
  • You have to hold it just right to enjoy the 3D fully
  • No option to switch back to the original
  • Unmodified soundtrack
  • Depth and darkness can obscure level details
  • Little extra content over the original.
  • Even the easiest difficulty level can be quite hard
  • Especially since some areas don’t have enough save points. Sometimes jumps and boosts don’t feel as precise if you use the circle pad for controls instead of the D-pad. The DSiware version of Cave Story isn’t included.

  • Abstract:  Cave Story 3D is a side-scrolling adventure with verve and charm. It is also a remake of a PC game that has been available since 2004, when Cave Story's lone hobbyist developer, Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya, first gave it away on the Internet. The original w...

  • Abstract:  3DSMetroid was wonderful. Back in 1996, it delivered a haunting new world filled with alien life forms, seemingly endless twisting corridors and a surprising heroine. Nintendo's developers created something special when they put together Metroid. Then ...

  • Abstract:  Maybe that’s why I like Cave Story 3D so much. A modernized remake of the independent PC development that came out in 2004 (and has since been reborn as a downloadable title for WiiWare and the Nintendo DSi Shop), this game hasn’t lost any spring in...

  • Cave Story is a brilliant, touching game that is truly special, and that all gamers should make it a point to play. But cheaper, arguably more perfect versions of it are easily available for download. In fact, through the eShop you can have this very s...

  • Abstract:  Cave Story is a modern classic. Sadly, many people still haven't ever played it, even though it's been released on WiiWare, DSiWare, and the iTunes App store. That's probably partly due to its retro look. It's hard to generate hype for a new (to reta...

  • Abstract:  Cave Story 3D started its life as just ’Cave Story’, an indie release on the PC. While I never played that version, many others did and liked what they saw; enough so that it was ported to WiiWare and DSiWare, bringing the 2D platformer to a wider audi...

  • Abstract:  Can you believe it’s been seven years since Cave Story appeared as a freeware game on PCs? In all that time, and on all the platforms it’s been ported to (including the excellent WiiWare version), it’s never been on store shelves. Well, friends, that d...

  • Abstract:  I am one of the very few people who never played this game, or at least, that is how I felt when all my friends told me about the free version of Cave Story that came out back in 2004 for PC. The original version of Cave Story was a free PC game that was ...
