The editors liked

  • Kamurocho and Sotenbori feel more lifelike than ever
  • No load screens and seamless combat transitions
  • One of the strongest titles in the series
  • Fun combat
  • Engaging substories that can be just as engrossing as the main tale
  • Fantastic story and characters are enhanced by modernization
  • Straightforward but dynamic combat rarely gets stale
  • Vibrant and atmospheric world that's wonderful to lose yourself in
  • Cabaret Club Grand Prix and Majima Construction Creator are substantial
  • A more polished dragon engine
  • Yakuza staple of balancing the irrelevant and serious
  • Memorable antagonist and a story worth getting invested in
  • Twice the city
  • Twice the fun
  • Toylets
  • Gravure photo shoots
  • Cabaret clubs and more
  • Brand new playable Majima chapters
  • NJPW wrestlers guest star in the clan creator once again
  • Brawlerstyle combat still feels great and there's little to keep you from
  • Richly detailed and densely packed recreation of Japan
  • Deep and fun combat system
  • Strong characters that fit perfectly into an excellent gangster story

The editors didn't like

  • Story is weaker than the first two outings
  • Fewer fighting styles
  • Fewer meaningful upgrade options
  • Omissions like a small third area are missed
  • The section with Majima offers no character progression
  • And lacks any substories
  • Majima Saga is disappointingly shallow
  • Some holdover mechanics feel dated
  • Newly added Majima stories a bit underwhelming
  • The series is starting to hit diminishing returns for those that keep up on every release
  • Gravure shoots are too risque for enjoying in public or on stream
  • Encounter rate for random street fights feels a bit too high
  • Some highly questionable content that undermines much of the game's charm
  • Every encounter tends to get solved in the same way
  • A few ham-fisted story moments

  • Kamurocho and Sotenbori feel more lifelike than ever, No load screens and seamless combat transitions
  • Story is weaker than the first two outings, Fewer fighting styles, fewer meaningful upgrade options
  • Ultimately Yakuza Kiwami 2 is more Yakuza. It's more of Kiryu and Kamurocho, more beating up random street ruffians and more plot twists. The latter aspect's a bit weaker this time around, but this being the third game to hit PC I imagine you already know...

  • Whether you're engrossed in hitting dudes in the face or running a successful hostess club or construction company, the gameplay in Yakuza: Kiwami 2 is addictive and easy to get lost in. The game is a masterpiece. It completely breathes new life into a la...

  • Abstract:  It's been nine years since Yakuza 2 came out on the PlayStation 2, which I remember well because I reviewed that video game way back then! I remember the game fondly as one of my favorite games on the PS2, so it was almost with a mixture of feeling both a...

  • Abstract:  Yakuza Kiwami 2 is the newest remake in the Yakuza series from SEGA, bringing over the 2006 PS2 game to modern consoles. This one will be a real treat for Yakuza fans, considering it's been long-regarded as the best game in the Yakuza series. That claim m...

  • Kiwami 2 is yet another stellar Yakuza re-release. This time it runs in Yakuza 6's dragon engine and it's absolutely gorgeous to look at. The problem is, Yakuza 6 came out in April. This is just another Yakuza sucking away another 80 hours of your life...

  • Mechanically, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is the best offering in the entire series. With the abundance of fun distractions, quirky side stories, break-neck and brutal combat, and the franchise's signature dark, if sometimes convoluted story, newcomers and veterans a...
