The editors liked

  • The build quality of the SAKIPearl is first class. It is built like the proverbial tank both inside and out with an industrial design that is deserving of proud display
  • The SAKIPearl places sound quality first
  • The Pearl line provides the enhanced performance of a "modded" unit at a reasonable price and without compromising the manufacturer's warranty

The editors didn't like

  • The SAKIPearl cannot access the multichannel data on SACD's nor can it output digital data from the SACD layer of SACDs
  • Digital inputs are limited to a single optical input. While optical inputs eliminate the possibility of ground loops
  • It would be nice to have more input options
  • At this price point and quality level I would have expected this unit to be equipped with balanced outputs.

  • Marantz's Reference SA-KI-Pearl is a beautifully built, well-engineered SACD/CD player that offers impressive musical balance and well-rounded overall performance. It's like a finely mastered CD or LP—on hearing it, you'll know that whoever was behind its...

  • Abstract:  The main limitation of the disc player is that it cannot derive a multichannel output from SACDs which, as noted earlier, may not be an issue for some. However, Sony’s latest Blu-ray players can stream a multichannel output from SACD via HDMI. This may not be..

  • Abstract:  The Marantz tradition has always been about enjoying music. The Marantz SA-KI Pearl is a limited-edition SACD player from the Marantz Reference Series product line. The “KI” in the product name refers to Ken Ishiwata, who is the actual designer of the...

  • The Marantz SA-KI-Pearl SACD player exceeded my expectations for a $3,000 machine, especially during a time when I also started auditioning a $29,000 tube DAC in for review. Consider the fact that Ken Ishiwata chose to offer a component more easily afford...

  • Abstract:  Being in business – any business - for 30 years is reason enough to celebrate, but when you've enjoyed a long-running position at the top of your field there's even more cause for rejoicing. That's the story behind Marantz's SA-KI Pearl components, a l...

  • Marantz's Pearl line of reference products not only pays homage to brand manager and audio designer Ken Ishiwata, it pays homage to all those who have tweaked and modified their components to get the best possible sound for their dollar. If you do not ...

  • Abstract:  Marantzs high end offerings have impressed us in the past. The new line gets away from the unique gold styling that so caught our eye for the more traditional black with blue lights that has been adopted by just about everyone. According to Marantz, t...
